Mercedes sales rise 16% in September on China demand

FRANKFURT — Mercedes-Benz’s global brand sales increased 16 percent in September to a record 188,444 cars, buoyed by a 53 percent jump in deliveries in China.

It was the Mercedes brand’s 31st consecutive month of record sales.

Sales at the Smart brand rose 51 percent in September to 10,250, boosted by the arrival of the new ForTwo and ForFour models, Daimler said in a statement today. That helped combined sales at Mercedes and Smart grow 17 percent to 198,694 last month.

Mercedes brand deliveries in China rose to 38,663 in September, while in the U.S., they increased 6.2 percent to 29,020. European sales were up 11 percent to 85,944.

Daimler said global deliveries in the first nine months were boosted by a 60 percent increase in sales of the new Mercedes C class while continued strong demand for compact cars helped the brand as deliveries of the A class, B class, GLA, CLA and CLA Shooting Brake rose 27 percent through September.

Combined nine-month car sales for Mercedes and Smart jumped 16 percent to 1.46 million vehicles with volume up 15 percent to 1.37 million for the Mercedes brand. Smart sales rose 31 percent to 88,018.
