Andy Nicol talks up Scotland mindset : Rugby World Cup 2015

Former captain Andy Nicol believes recent wins over Australia are a significant psychological benefit to Scotland in Sunday’s World Cup meeting.

The Scots have beaten Australia in two of their last three meetings.

«Australia completely outplayed England so you would say this is a tougher quarter-final for us,» said Nicol.

«But we have this mental block against England at Twickenham, not winning there since 1983. We don’t have that same mental block against Australia.»

Scotland came from behind against Samoa to guarantee their place in the last eight of the tournament with a 36-33 victory on Saturday.

Australia’s stout defence under pressure in a 15-6 triumph over Waleshas now set up a contest between the Wallabies and the Scots at the home of English rugby.

In the most recent of their last three meetings, Australia came out on top at Murrayfield in 2013 — but Scotland won 9-6 in New South Wales in 2012 and 9-8 in Edinburgh in 2009.

«We can just go out there without any pressure on us whatsoever and throw everything at them,» added Nicol, who won 23 caps for his country.

«I’ve been very impressed with Australia but there is nothing to lose for Scotland.

«We’re at the level we should be. I don’t think Australia will look forward to playing Scotland on Sunday.»
