The tennis player Rafael Nadal made a winning return after injury in his opening men’s doubles match alongside Juan Monaco at the Chile Open. After beating Czech second seeds Frantisek Cermak and Lukas Dlouhy 6-3 6-2, he admitted he is still in pain.

He said: «The doctors have said it’s OK. There is no risk of making it worse. My knee keeps hurting. But the fact I am playing here is a thing of joy.»

The 26 years old player teamed up with Argentina’s Monaco to win his first match since his dramatic second round five-set defeat by Czech Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June.

The former No1 was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open after his recovery from tendonitis in his knee was hit by a stomach virus.
